Spain consumes 14% more organic foods

The consumption of organic foods in Spain grew by 14% in 2017 compared to 2016, according to the study: "Myths and realities about the consumption of organic products".

The study, carried out by the consultant specialised in market products Kantar Worldpanel and Fundació La Pedrera, highlights that the main reason why organic products are increasingly popular is the improvements achieved in their taste and the greater pleasure derived from their consumption.

The study also highlighted that the bulk of sales still take place in specialised stores, with 40% of the total, but that the greatest growth in the sale of organic food products is recorded by supermarkets, with 42% of the increase.

It has also revealed that consumers prefer to consume local products (77%) over organic products (23%).

The director of the Kantar Worldpanel food department, Joan Riera, highlighted in the presentation of the study that prices are the first aspect that consumers take into account when buying organic foods (43%), followed by flavour (36%) and the product's social commitment (12.3%).

At the opening of the 2nd Annual Conference on Organic Food Products, the founder of the Slow Food movement, Carlo Petrini, stated that "the food production system is criminal and that it is necessary to change it, since it contributes to big global health problems and it is also behind many economic and political conflicts."

Petrini added that it is also the first cause of climate change, since it is "responsible for 34% of gas emissions, well above the transport sector, as well as of the waste of resources, with a consumption of 75% of water for agriculture and the destruction of 38% of the food produced on a global scale."

Carlo Petrini concluded that the new food production system should be based "on a proximity co-production system that connects local producers with local consumers."
