Mexico achieved a record export of fresh and dehydrated mango to US

Mexico broke the record for its exports of fresh and dehydrated mango to the United States in 2017, with total shipments worth 334 million dollars.

Both types of products have a potential growth in foreign sales, due to Mexico's geographical position, phytosanitary controls, trade agreements, product quality, and necessary logistics improvements.

Mexican exports of fresh mango to the US totalled 278 million dollars last year, i.e. 6.1% more than in the previous year. Meanwhile exports of dehydrated mango amounted to 56 million dollars, i.e. 30.1% more than in the previous year. A historical maximum in both cases.

In Mexico, the Ataulfo Mango from Soconusco Chiapas has had a denomination of origin since 2003. The denomination is applied to the mango that has an average weight of 350 grams and an average composition of 69% of pulp, 19% of peel, and 8.5% of seed.

Japan has an increasing demand for hard shell varieties, such as the Kent, Haiden, Tommy, and Ataulfo varieties. Mexico is the oldest mango supplier to Japan and the leader in that market.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Mexico has maintained its leadership by offering a fruit rich in flavor and by meeting high quality standards and phytosanitary requirements, such as having its main exporters, the states of Sinaloa, Michoacan, and Nayarit being recognized as free of the fruit fly.

Mexico is the largest exporter of fresh mangoes in the world, this fruit has been the spearhead of Mexican dehydrated fruit exports.

This business could be promising, considering the strength of Mexico's fresh fruit production and the large international dry fruit market.
