In Saxony, acreage grows by 11 percent

Germany: 75 percent more shrub berries harvested in Brandenburg

In 2017, 55 Brandenburg companies were producing shrub berries. The berries grew on a record arceage of 1,000 hectares; 120 hectares more than in 2016. According to data from the Statistical Office Berlin-Brandenburg in 2017 more than 3,100 tons of shrub berries were harvested. Compared to 2016, this was an increase of around 75 percent.

60 percent of the Brandenburg shrub berry areas were cultivated by 22 companies that operated according to the principles of organic farming. Almost 80 percent of the shrub berry areas (so about 800 hectares) were located in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Potsdam-Mittelmark.

In Saxony, berries were grown on 368 hectares in 2017. As a result, the acreage increased by an additional 38 hectares (11 percent) compared to the year before. In the year under review, 47 farms cultivated shrub berries in Saxony, including 19 farms with 303 hectares (82 percent) of organic cultivation. Up to 1.4 hectares of cultivated area under protective covers, was made up of open fields. The centre of the Saxon shrub berry production is located in the district of Meißen with 201 hectares (55 percent), according to data from the State Statistical Office in Saxony.
