According to data from the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food of Mexico (SAGARPA), the export figures of Hass avocado from Latin-America to the United States, Europe, and Asia have had a remarkable growth during the last year.
Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia are the largest exporters of Hass avocados worldwide. According to reports from the Mexican entity, 2 out of 10 avocados consumed in the United States come from Mexico.
Other countries that consume these avocado are Canada, Japan, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. According to data from the Mexican government, Mexico produced 644 tons of avocado in 2017, which had a relatively accessible price that ranged from 1 to 3 dollars per unit.
Most of the avocados from Mexico are produced in the states of Michoacan, Jalisco, Nayarit, Morelos, and Guerrero.
According to the Hass Avocado Board, an organism that promotes and monitors the consumption of this fruit in the United States, California consumed 2,635 tons of avocado during the first week of February.
Colombia joined the list of avocado producers as it began its exports in November 2017 with 34 tons of Hass avocado grown in regions such as Los Cristales, Viterbo, and Caldas. The product was transported from these regions to Cartagena by road and then to Palm Beach, California, by sea.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture of Colombia, the product is also being grown in Antioquia, Quindio, Risaralda, Tolima, Huila, and Valle del Cauca thanks to the results of the Colombia Siembra plan, which helps around 25,000 families who work and depend of the avocado agricultural industry.
In addition, the Colombian avocado will be present in Walmart stores in California and later throughout the US territory.
