Tjerk Nagel, (Konaxx) believes more onions were cleared out than people think
"CBS market estimates misled the market"
It is calm on the onion market at the moment, but Tjerk Nagel of the onion sorting and packaging station Konaxx Onions from the Frisian Sint Jacobi Parochie isn't pessimistic about the season. "I believe more onions were cleared out than people think. Personally, I think the CBS harvest estimates are even lower than they have announced."
Tjerk completely understands the ado about these estimates. "When the figures were announced in the autumn, the small bit of faith left in the market was gone all at once. They misled people with this. It wasn't good."
"The quality of the onions at the moment is plateauing. Even if you wanted to put your foot to the floor, the quality is still a limiting factor," continues Tjerk. "At the moment it is reasonably calm, but the demand is quite wide. There are onions going to Malaysia, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe is also starting to ask and buy. It's just on the short side of fun, but in my view we just need something to happen and there will be an increase in price!"
