Turkey hopes to increase cherry exports to China

In recent years, cherries have suddenly become a hot topic on the market. Especially in winter, various online platforms are actively promoting cherries from Chile, New Zealand and Australia. The competition before the winter holidays is crazy.

The main producer of cherries in the world is Turkey, it produces 400.000 tons of cherries per year. Turkey is followed by the US, which makes 300.000 per year. The third one is Chile, it produces more than 100.000 tons per year (80,000 tons of which are eaten by the Chinese). Curiously, you can rarely see Turkish cherries in the major supermarkets and fresh markets in China.

One of the reasons is that Turkish cherries are not suitable for long-distance transportation. Turkey has a limited number of cold processing equipment facilities, which restricts its export capabilities. Besides, Turkish cherries are very sensitive to the rainy weather. The need to replace pickers to protect their quality, pesticide residue and other factors all affect more Turkish cherries reaching the Chinese market.

Cherries are very popular among Chinese customers these days. Turkish cherry producers are putting in a lot of effort to conquer the Chinese market and make it possible to sell high-quality cherries at a lower price. At the same time, the opening of the Chinese consumer market will enable Turkish farmers to break free from the situation where they rely only on Europe and Russia to be the main consumers of their cherries.
