Spain: Mandarin labelling at Aldi and Carrefour to be investigated

LA UNIÓ de Llauradors has asked the General Directorate for Trade and Consumption and the Agriculture Department to initiate an investigation into the labelling used by Aldi and Carrefour for different types of mandarins, and which may be providing inaccurate information for marketing purposes.

At Aldi, this Agricultural Professional Organization has detected the sale of mandarins in bulk under the label "Nadorcott Tang gold" (in the week from 5 to 10 February, although the promotion will still be underway from 12 to 18 February). For its part, Carrefour is carrying out another promotional campaign for mandarins from 13 to 22 February, labelling the fruit under the designation "Nadorcott-Tango".

The Tang-gold/Tango variety and the Nadorcott variety are two completely differentiated varieties subject to plantation and marketing licenses (royalties) which citrus producers must pay in order to plant and market them; royalties that, by the way, are not cheap and exceed € 20,000 per hectare in some cases.

Consequently, LA UNIÓ believes that, in addition to confusing the consumer, this may be causing serious damage to the producer; in this case, to those of the Tang-gold/Tango variety. The reason is that the Nadorcott is a mandarin variety that contains seeds, while the Tang-Gold is seedless. They are therefore different varieties and cannot be marketed as the same, as the lack of seeds makes the Tang-Gold more commercially attractive.
