In 2017 Mexican agricultural exports to Canada surpassed the two billion dollars mark for the first time and were 11 percent higher than in the previous year, according to the agricultural adviser of Mexico in this country, Iker Reyes Godelmann.
As part of the celebration of Canada's Agriculture Day, Reyes Godelmann told Notimex that in 2016 Mexico's agricultural exports to Canada had amounted to 843 million US dollars and that the following year the amount had grown to 2.050 billion dollars.
In the same period, Canadian agricultural food imports increased by 14 percent, from 1,331 to 1,496 million dollars.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa), the main Mexican products exported were avocados, which had a 27 percent increase; raspberries and blackberries, which increased by 23 percent, and fresh strawberries, which increased by 42 percent.
Sugar cane, cauliflower, broccoli, and fresh blueberries exports also increased.
"We can proudly say that nowadays nine out of every ten avocados consumed in Canada are Mexican, and that the most appealing products for the Canadian consumers are the berries," added Godelmann, who participated in the celebrations of the Agriculture Day.
The Canadian Minister of Agriculture, Lawrence Macaulay, said that "We celebrate the hard working farmers and food makers across our country who put quality food on our kitchen tables every day. They are the backbone of our economy."
