Recently, officers of the Yangtai International Airport Quarantine Service have arrested a batch of banned cherries. The fruit belonged to a passenger from the flight 9C8676 Thailand-China. Further tests indicated, that the cherries were infected with Monilinia fructicola, a plant pathogen that causes brown rot. This was the first time Yangtai Airport Quarantine Service has detected this kind of fungus.
Monilinia fructicola is marked as a malignant fungus in China, the EU and 25 more countries. It can endanger many kinds of fruits, such as plums, peaches, nectarines, cherries, apricots, apples, pears and grapes. It has caused heavy losses of stone fruits in North America and Australia.
