Spain's tropical fruit sector to take advantage of avocados and mangoes to improve its numbers

Malaga's tropical fruit sector wants to continue growing. Their figures beat sales and billing records year after year. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, the export value of Andalusian avocado in the last campaign (between September 2016 and July 2017) increased by 32%, exceeding 251 million euro. In this line, practically all of the marketing companies in the province say they have improved their economic results compared to the previous year. They have increased their sales in both the foreign and domestic markets, and increased their turnover. Farmers, despite the drought, are also achieving good prices in the field. The avocado has been paid at over three euro per kilo in the field.

The internationalisation of the sector requires an important effort from the different companies, which have to travel and attend the main international fruit and vegetable fairs to contact customers and suppliers, and to reach new markets.

Europe is the destination of 80% of the mango and avocado produced in Malaga. As such, Fruit Logistica, the international fruit and vegetable fair in Berlin, which will be held from February 7 to 9, is a fundamental date to consolidate destinations and find new customers. Frutas Montosa, Frutas Reyes Gutierrez, Trops, Axarfruit, Tropical Millenium, and Alcoaxarquia, among other companies, will attend the current edition with a large deployment of staff and media. In addition, the rest of the marketers will also attend Fruit Logistica as visitors in a year in which producers don't know how the next mango and avocado crops in the province will behave due to the drought. They all have scheduled contacts and meetings in an attempt to improve their numbers and strengthen their presence in different markets taking advantage of the pull that avocados still have, thanks to their versatility in the kitchen and their reputation for being healthy, and the mango, thanks to its important content of fibers and vitamins.
