Spain: Cordoba sells 20% more citrus in Asia

The 2017-2018 citrus campaign is now at its peak with enough data to take stock. These months have led to a slight downward correction in the regional government's forecast. The head of Palmanaranja, Antonio Carmona, said that they now expect the final harvest to be reduced by between 5 and 10 percent compared to the previous year, at least as far as the first varieties harvested in the region of the Vega del Guadalquivir are concerned.

It is worth recalling that the prospect presented in October last year by the Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development pointed to this season's production in the province reaching 249,220 tonnes. This is 12,813 less than in the 2016-2017 campaign, which in relative terms entails a drop of almost 5 percent. The fact is that this was greater than the reduction expected for the whole of Andalusia (-2.8%), as well as for Seville (-3.8%) and Huelva (-3.4%), the main citrus producers in the region.

Carmona reported that the fruit sizes have been smaller due to the lack of rainfall and the high temperatures, which explains the reduction in the total volume. Meanwhile, prices are at a high level, which helps make the market more attractive. The Citrus Exchange of the Chamber of Commerce revealed that varieties such as the Navelina or Salustiana are currently reaching prices of about 0.2-0.22 Euro per kilo in Cordoba; figures that exceed those of a year ago by 17 percent.

As regards the marketing, the head of Palmanaranja highlighted the growth of the demand in Asia, to the point that producers in Cordoba have been unable to fully cover it. Marketing in those countries has increased by 20 percent in the last year, so there are good prospects for the coming years.
