So far no one has tried to grow sweet potatoes in Germany, as the weather conditions in the usual growing areas such as the US and Spain are much better. Owner Robert Koch was rightfully doubting whether this cultivation would really work. “It is, of course, a very delicate product that can by no means be compared with normal potatoes. Nevertheless, the growth conditions are very good. The cultivation trials brought very good qualities to light, despite the fact that it was all biological cultivation.”
Crucial element
The next step, in order to expand, is now to win over food retailers and consumers for sweet potatoes. But this also applies to the so-called Blaue Sankt Galler, an ancient potato breed that had been forgotten for a long time and has now been rediscovered. Because of its colour and great taste, this potato was very well received by the customers. It is not for nothing that currently it is being considered whether enlarging the acreage is a possibility. According to Koch, this success certainly also had something to do with the quality label 'Proven quality from Bavaria'.
The Johann Koch company is a complete trading company with over 100 years of experience in the industry. The trading company is now run by the fifth generation, selling a mixed product range including potatoes and onions as well as dates from Tunisia. The latter imported product is being processed and packaged in North Africa before being distributed to German customers. “The enthusiasm for this exclusive product has also been growing significantly for several years,” says owner Robert Koch.
