China: Decline in Chinese cabbage volumes

It is currently the season in which the autumn harvest of Chinese cabbage enters the market. The main production area of Chinese cabbage in autumn is Xiaozhi Village in Pingyang, Shandong. The Price Bureau of Pingyang County surveyed the Chinese cabbage industry in autumn and made a comparison with the previous year:

The surface area devoted to Chinese cabbage plantation increases steadily. The main reason for this continued increase is that last year the price was good, so more vegetable farmers started to plant Chinese cabbage with vigor. The production volume shows a slight decrease. The main reason for this decrease is that this year, when winter began, temperatures dropped suddenly. This influenced the growth of Chinese cabbage. The price of Chinese cabbage was disastrously low this year, but because of the recent snow and sudden drop in temperatures, the price has recovered slightly. It increased to 0.12 yuan [0.19 USD].

The income of Chinese cabbage farmers has dropped by as much as 50%. This is in stark contrast with the bumper harvest. However, because the price remains low, the income of vegetable farmers is also reduced, sometimes by as much as 50%. This year the autumn had many sunny days and vegetables grew quickly. This year the price of many vegetables dropped. In general the prices are lower than last year. The price of Chinese cabbage was relatively high last year, but this year there has been a bumper harvest. In addition, the Chinese cabbage crop in open fields can not be preserved very long in this weather. This situation certainly influences market conditions and price. It has caused a steep decline in the price of Chinese cabbage. It is estimated, however, that in the short term there is little room for the price of Chinese cabbage to drop even further.
