Currently, citrus is the staple business of every retailer and wholesaler. Oranges, clementines and tangerines are sold in large quantities on the market. The grapefruit is currently experiencing its peak season, although the popularity of this slightly bitter fruit is somewhat lower than that of to other varieties. In the orange and clementine business, the focus is on the Spanish products, whereas in the case of grapefruit, Turkish products are particularly in demand.
The so-called Red Ruby from the USA has been the most popular grapefruit for several years now. In December and January, however, there are many grapefruits of various origins on the market. “Turkey is currently very well represented on the market,” notes Sebastian Samborski from fruit farm Hulsberg on the Bremen wholesale market. “The Turkish grapefruit is currently relatively cheap and of a very good quality.”
Grapefruits have been sold for years under the name Pampelmuse, by fruit farm Hulsberg as well. Generally Pampelmuse are however very large and bitter with a thick skin and the diameter of a small melon. However, currently these are rarely found in German retail and wholesale. The grapefruit, on the other hand, is a cross between Pampelmuse and orange, which can also be sold well as a convenience product. Samborski: “We have cut grapefruit -in cubes and slices- on offer as well. The fruit is also in great demand as an ingredient in fruit salads and blends.”

The Fruchthaus Hulsberg company was founded in 1991 by Engin Denizyilmaz and his wife Maike. After the first years in the 30 m2
shop on Hulsberg, the company entered the catering business. In 1999, the company moved in full to the Bremen wholesale market and convenience products were also included in its range. In 2016, its 25-year anniversary followed, and meanwhile the son-in-law Sebastian (active since 2010) and youngest daughter Shasia (working since 2016) have strengthened its operations. In the meantime, the company has mainly concentrated on convenience vegetables, but also offers a small selection of seasonal fruit salads.
