Germany: Hellmann builds new logistics location in Bielefeld

The Osnabrück logistics company Hellmann Worldwide Logistics has strengthened its presence in Bielefeld. On the Friedrich-Hagemann-Straße in the east of Bielefeld, a modern 5,500 m², centrally located transhipment facility, plus 1,500 m² of office space and a 1,500 m² warehouse will be built on a plot of almost 30,000 m². The reason for the new building is because the previously used transshipment terminal on the Teltower road had reached the limits of its capacity. Construction began in mid-January 2018. The completion of the properties, with an investment volume of around 10 million euros, is planned for the beginning of the third quarter of 2018.

"The new building underlines the importance of the Bielefeld location for our company, in which we have been active for over 50 years and from which we today serve well over 1,000 customers. We continue to focus on growth in the Ostwestfalen region in the future and can offer our customers the best possible service through state-of-the-art infrastructure and optimized processes,” says Thomas Knecht, CEO of Hellmann Worldwide Logistics.

Hellmann will use the new location as a cross-dock for the groupage input and output. With 70 docking ramps and gates as well as a larger transhipment area compared to the previous location, the new building will have sufficient capacity to ensure future growth in the economically strong region of East Westphalia. The new ramps will be equipped with a noise reducing coating. In addition to this, the entire building will be constructed according to current energy standards. The construction of the plant is carried according to strict specifications, in order to best meet the requirements of the logistics facility.

The Hellmann company has for some time been considering the expansion in the economically strong region. However, the acquisition of Spedition Kunze in 2013 and the associated takeover of the Bielefeld Kunze site on Wilhelm-Bertelsmann-Straße initially put the project on hold. When the capacity limits of the previous location were reached, the construction project was again accelerated by the Hellmann Management Board and the management of the Road & Rail division, in order to be able to sustainably pursue the growth strategy for the Bielefeld location. Hellmann will continue to operate the former Kunze site for its contract logistics business in Bielefeld. The alternative location on Teltower Straße is to be sold after the move.

Frank Niedringhaus, branch manager of Hellmann Bielefeld, on the construction of the new plant: "With the new building, we can create a modern and appealing work atmosphere for our approximately 100 employees, while at the same time sustainably optimizing our logistical processes. Furthermore, Hellmann is strengthening its own real estate and construction expertise through its own construction. That's why the project is so important to us.”
