China: Wo tangerines enter the market

The local government of Wuming in Nanning, Guangxi, organized a news conference on January 27th, for the 2018 market entrance of Wo tangerines. They announced that the Wo tangerine harvest, taken from 667 hectares, has entered the market. The Wo tangerine is a late-maturing citrus. It will enter the market during the Spring Festival season, just as fruit production in the rest of the country enters the off season. The Wo tangerine is a hybrid of the "Temple" tangerine and the "Dancy" red tangerine. It belongs to the category of late-maturing tangerines. It was introduced from South Korea in 2004 by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Ganju Institute.

The Fruit Production Department of Wuming obtained 80 thousand Wo tangerine seedlings from the Ganju Institute. The seedlings were divided and spread across plantations in Shuangqiao Town, Taiping Town, Chengxiang Town, and Fucheng Town. The trees began bearing fruit in 2014. The production volume per 0.07 hectare reached around 3 thousand kg with a value between 35 thousand yuan [5564.65 USD] and 40 thousand yuan [6359.60 USD]. In 2016, the overall production volume in Wuming reached 120 thousand tons with a retail value of more than 1 billion yuan [1,589.9 million USD]. In 2017 the surface area of Wo tangerine plantations reached 20 thousand hectares, which accounts for 1/3 of all Wo tangerine plantations in Guangxi. About 667 hectares have entered production with an estimated production volume of 280 thousand tons of Wo tangerines. This production volume has an estimated value of more than 3.3 billion yuan [524.7 million USD].
