There has been a considerable increase of eastbound trade, with Hungary in particular. Each week, 10 train pairs come and go from Budapest. "We currently have a single refrigerated warehouse, but we will build another one in a 300 thousand square metre area we own."
In July 2017, a government decree declared the port a free zone coordinated by the port authority. It has actually been a free zone since 1700, but the situation was ratified only a few months ago. No duties or taxes are paid for incoming goods as long as they remain in the free zone, where they can be processed or packaged. In addition, the taxation for imported produce as is or produce processed in a free zone is different.
2017 has been a record year for the Trieste port: the total amount is close to €62 million with 61,955,405 tons of handled goods, a +4.58% increase compared to 2016. The container segment recorded unprecedented volumes at 616,156 TEU (+26.66% compared to 2016). The number of containers with semi-trailers and swap bodies reached 1,314,953 TEU (+13.52%).
In addition, 8,681 trains transited, a 13.76% increase compared to 2016 and a 45.17% increase compared to 2015. Such growth was supported by international trains related to container traffic (34.31%). It is clear how railway traffic pushed the container segment, meaning the "strategy chosen by the port authority is paying off. The considerable investments made by the Rfi, FVG Region and the government amount to €83 million and prove it."
The element that makes the seaport unique in Italy is not only the fact that it is a leading port for the railway and intermodal traffic on an international scale, bur also because many actors on the railway market operate there. In addition to the Fs group, there are also private Italian railway companies (CFI and Inrail) as well as some companies (Rail Cargo Carrier Italy, Rail traction Company, CapTrain Italia) participated by leading European operators (Rail Cargo Austria, DB Schenker, SNCF). The essential part Adriafer played (subsidiary to AdSP) must also be stressed as, as reported by D'Agostino, "in July it obtained the certification to operate in a network and not just manoeuvre".
The group controlled by the Austrian Rial Cargo is the main protagonist with a share corresponding to over 28% of total trains. This in turn is testament to the historic positioning of the seaport with respect to final central-European markets. The railway destination network has expanded over the past three years involving all the main continental hubs.
Just mention the services supplied by Ekol activated in 2017: Kiel-Göteborg on the Adriatic-Baltic axis and the recent connection to Zeebrugge in Belgium excellent to reach Great Britain. In addition, the service leaving from dock VII (Trieste Marine Terminal) towards Budapest is among the best performing.
Trieste remains a privileged gateway for Turkish trade in Europe: the RO-RO segment is constantly increasing with 314,705 vehicles (+3.99% compared to 2016). In addition to produce, 40% of the oil consumed in Germany is unloaded in Trieste and transferred to Bavaria through a pipeline.
