China: 2017 citrus market analysis

According to preliminary data, the production of grapefruits in 2017 increased by 4% and and accounted for 4.8 million tons per year. According to producers from Guangdong and Fujian, the harvest is better than before mostly because of less rainfall and a mild climate. Production in Sichuan and Chongqing Provinces has also increased.

National market demand for citrus has also increased to 4.6 million tons, which is 4% higher than before. Grapefruits have become the most imported variety of citrus, their imports amounted to 40,000 tons. In 2016, South Africa was the main supplier, 67% of all imported citrus arrived in China from there. In 2017, China produced so many citrus fruits that about 200,000 tons were exported to other places such as Europe, Russia and Hong Kong.
