China: Spring Festival pushes up longan prices

The closer it gets to the Spring Festival, the higher are the prices of fruits and vegetables. The range of future prices also depends on the sales of different kinds of fruits. This week, the price of longan has increased compared to last week. The main reason is last week's snowy weather. Consumers preferred to stay at home rather than go shopping. This week, the weather has improved and the Spring Festival is coming, so the customers are in a rush.

All the longan is transported to China from Thailand. During longan season, from August to May, it costs about 160-180 yuan. This year, longan plantations in Thailand have suffered heavy rains as well as drought, which have negatively affected the yield. The cost of transportation has also increased. Since longan requires additional processing and preparation before it can be sold on the market, the costs have increased significantly. Longan merchants said that every truckload became 2000-3000 yuan more expensive. However, it must be admitted that transportation costs increase every year with the arrival of the Spring Festival.
