"China is a leading country in the production of fresh pears, but the annual export volume of fresh pears only accounts for 5% of the total production volume. Under these circumstances it is only to be expected that the domestic price has a significant influence on the export price. The demand from such important consumer cities as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing was not at all strong in comparison with previous years. Overall, the domestic retail market is moving towards depression. This has caused the export price of new pears to take a dive." This is according to Mr. Zhao Xiaolei (Leo) of Hebei Tianbo.

"One leading cause for the excessive supply is that, overall, the surface area of fresh pear plantations has increased. Furthermore, many trees in these orchards have already entered their most productive stage. Even though the production of Huangguan pears was reduced because of a widespread outbreak of chicken feet disease (sooty blotch), this was only a small decrease in comparison with the overall production increase."
