Austria: Organic carrots in bags made from renewable materials
‘Ja! Natürlich’ organic carrots in a sustainable bag
"Organic produce from ‘Ja! Natürlich’; it stresses our feeling of responsibility for the environment. That's why we rely on green materials for our packaging,” explains Martina Hörmer, Managing Director of ‘Ja! Natürlich’. "We are committed to renewable raw materials and are step by step reducing plastic packaging, while minding the storage conditions and the freshness of our products." Through the use of alternative packaging such as compostable cellulose films and nets, ‘Ja! Natürlich’, over the past few years has already saved over 380 tons of plastic. In addition, the paper bags made of grass for fruits and vegetables already in use, will be pushed out further and extended to additional articles.
New carrot bag ensures longer freshness
The sustainable packaging has a positive effect on the freshness of the carrots. Martina Hörmer is happy: "Thanks to this new packaging, our organic carrots stay fresh for longer. Our new bag not only helps to promote renewable raw materials, thereby avoiding plastic, but also has a positive impact on the quality of the food.”
Ecological and social sustainability
The new bag of the ‘Ja! Natürlich’ carrots consists of about 40% renewable ingredients such as thistle and sunflower oil. The thistles for the biodegradable bag come from the area around Porto Torres in Sardinia. The perennial, native plant is fully adapted to the Mediterranean climatic conditions and thrives even in dry and hot climates without additional irrigation or fertilization. The local cultivation of the plant results in sustainable projects (social and ecological), in collaboration with the farmers of Sardinia.
