Prices halved compared to last year

Germany: “Stable market situation for Italian lettuce varieties”

While the available quantities of imported Spanish goods is rather limited due to weather conditions, the market situation in the Italian import market looks rather stable. Although the prices are halved compared to last year, the sales are going much better. Good news for the catering industry, where colorful salads are used all year round in large quantities.

The price differences between today's market situation and last year's colorful salads look almost ridiculous. In the previous year at this time, you paid on average about 11.00 euros for a box with 9 heads. Nowadays you pay about 5.00 euros for the usual varieties Lollo Rosso, Bionda and the Eichblatt blends. Of course, this is closely related to last year's cold, which led to quality problems and shortages of goods throughout the Mediterranean. “Right now, the quality of the colorful salads is satisfactory, as well as the sales. And the market situation is likely to remain stable,” says Michael Kell, Managing Director of the fruit wholesaler of the same name in Bad Tölz.

Import season
Although regionally grown lamb's lettuce, as well as Chinese cabbage and endive are preferred in the food retail trade, large consumers attach great importance to imported lettuce from Italy, says the supplier. “Fine lettuce is sold very often. This, in my view, has to do with optics, as well as the processing speed.” The wholesaler purchases his Italian goods through an agency and usually distributes the heads within 24 hours. “What we get delivered today goes out the same day or the next day, in the morning.”

Corn salad grows in large quantities in domestic greenhouses and is therefore available year-round. Kell gets colorful salads such as the popular Lollo Rosso and Bionda until April from the Italian production areas between Verona and Naples. But that does not mean that German vegetable producers are not trying to breed the fine leafy lettuce as well. Kell: "Munich gardeners are already cultivating colorful salads in their greenhouses, but only in small quantities. That hardly becomes lucrative because of the heating costs.”

Gastro supplier
Fruit wholesaler Kell exists since 1949 and has grown in the course of the years, completely focusing on the supplying caterers. Its clientele mainly includes large consumers such as canteen kitchens, canteens and clinics. The product range includes vegetables of all kinds, mushrooms and potato products, but also exotic fruits and herbs.
