Colombia: Low risk of frost will benefit agriculture

Producers are used to expecting frosts and sunny days at the beginning of the year. This year, however, most of the country is affected by heavy rains and there are little or no frosts.

The frosts were, for many years, a headache for farmers and ranchers.

Luis Alfonso Lopez, the head of the Forecasts and Alerts Service of the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) said there had been no frosts in the Cundinamarca, Boyaca, Antioquia, Santander, and NariƱo so far this year.

The agricultural sector hasn't been affected by the weather
Usually, producers don't have any crops for the beginning of the year, as they know that they might lose them and their investment to the frosts.

German Palacio, the manager of Fedepapa, said that producers had not had any losses due to climatic conditions so far this year.

"Producers know that if they sow in October, for example, they have a high probability of having losses because of the frosts in January.

Producers finished sowing their crops at the end of December, so the crops wouldn't be harmed by the frosts anyway because the seedlings are only starting to emerge from the soil at this time of the year," he added.
