The Netherlands shows interest in Colombia's Cauca Valley

The Cauca Valley’s agro-industrial vocation and the opportunities offered by the Port of Buenaventura to develop logistics projects are two of the many reasons why the Netherlands has set its sights on the region. 

The agro-industrial sector is of such relevance that a report of the Chamber of Commerce of Cali on exports at the end of October 2017 reveals that 27.5% of the country's external agro-industrial sales to the world were dispatched from the Cauca Valley.

The fact that the Netherlands is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products makes the department a potential supplier of this kind of goods.

"The Valley has an agro-industrial vocation and we are constantly looking for alliances allowing us to buy agricultural products to transform them and sell them to other countries in the European Union," said the Executive Director of the Colombian-Dutch Chamber, Jan Willem van Bokhoven.

Products such as sugarcane, bananas, pineapples, citrus fruits, bananas, coffee, papayas, avocados, chontaduro, grapes, lulo and guava, among others, are cultivated permanently in the Valley, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, and this may be attractive for the Dutch companies interested in this region, not only to buy that type of products, but also to establish themselves there.

Although there are already firms with Dutch capital operating in this part of the country, such as Unilever, Makro, APM Terminals and Akzo Nobel, there is a great interest in boosting the investment coming from that part of the world.

Several other sectors have also attracted the interest of the Netherlands, such as the logistics industry, given the weight of the Port of Buenaventura, which handles 53% of Colombia's inbound and outbound container trade.

"We want more Dutch companies to come to the Valley and bring their capital. Among the advantages offered by this department is the strategic location in the Pacific, not only for foreign trade, but also to supply the domestic market, because it is a point close to important consumption centres, such as Bogota and Medellin, "said the Executive Director of Invest Pacific, Alejandro Ossa Cárdenas.
