Within the last 20 years, the total acreage for carrots has doubled in Germany. This has to do, among other things, with the great importance of regionality in food retailing and the growing popularity of carrots in general. Today's prices are very volatile, but lower compared to last year. Last winter, the quality of the stock goods in the whole area was very good, according to Tobias Brun - Managing Director of the vegetable farm. “This year's harvest was quite normal, so no bumper crop. We now have to wait and see how the carrot quality develops in the warehouse; many lots are falling in quality and the yield per wooden box of raw materials is low.”
Knabbergemüse
Not only with thin carrots, but with snack carrots you can see that imported goods are being replaced increasingly by domestic production. The smaller snack carrots from German soil are especially popular, eaten for raw. Tobias Brun: “The snack carrots are clearly on the rise in Germany. More and more snack carrots are grown, buy us as well. It is of course a very different variety that is harvested sooner; it is sweeter because of this way of cultivating. Snack carrots will certainly continue to establish themselves in the food retail industry.”
Brun's snack carrots have a diameter of 1 to 2 cm, are at most 14 cm long and are sorted by hand and packed in bags of 200 or 250 grams. The trade in carrot packaging has become much broader in recent years. In addition to the standard 1 kg tray, the standard range also includes the 2 kg bag, the 1 kg organic bag, carrots bundles and mixed packs.
Fourth generation
The Brun Frischgemüse company in Borken is one of the major vegetable producers in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The family business is now run by the fourth generation and has a mixed range of products including carrots, celery, leeks, parsnips, root parsley, root vegetable mix and greens. In addition to the conventional carrots, the company also sources organic carrots from organic farms, which are processed in their own separate plant on site. Brun Frischgemüse mainly supplies food retailers, fruit wholesalers and processing companies throughout Germany.
