Mexico's citrus takes advantage of the misfortunes of the US

The misfortunes caused by fires and bad weather in the United States have affected its orange production, which represents an opportunity for Mexico, because despite the restrictions that President Donald Trump has imposed on Mexican products, the area of Martínez de la Torre has seen an upturn in exports, according to local producers.

The producers from Veracruz have started to look for new markets in Asia and Europe, which are interested in their traditional and organic products, due to the protectionist rhetoric employed by Trump throughout his presidential campaign and after taking office.

Octavio Najera, the president of the Association of Ranchers and Producers of the State of Veracruz, said that, despite the restrictions imposed on Mexican products, Martinez de la Torre continued to send most of its orange production to the United States.

"The citrus issue needs work because the Free Trade Agreement puts producers at a disadvantage, which is why they are looking for new market options, such as China and Japan," he said.

Najera also said that the sale of oranges and citrus fruits in general to the United States would probably improve because of the conditions of the North American market. However, he added, even though Mexico can't rely on the misfortunes of the Americans, it is -no doubt- a good moment to negotiate the price of citrus.
