China: Increased export volume of Jining garlic does not lead to increased export income

The total export volume of Jining garlic in 2017 amounted to 770 thousand tons, worth 913 million USD. This was an increase in weight of 10% in comparison with the year before, but a decrease in worth by 21.49%. The export volume increases, but the price drops. Jining garlic is a competitive export product. The five foremost export destinations are India, Malaysia, Brasil, Philippines, and Vietnam. Garlic is in the first position nationwide when it comes to export volume.

Jining is the country's main production area for garlic. At present, there are over 180 garlic export businesses on file with the Jining Office of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine. Jining exported 10% more garlic by weight in 2017 than it did in 2016, but following the unsettling price increase of garlic in 2016, now the price has come down again. The average price dropped from 1,600 USD in 2016 to around 1,100 USD in 2017. This has led to an actual decrease of export value in comparison with last year.
