Italy: Stable market for bananas

The banana market is rather stable, as there are no particular crises and prices don't fluctuate a lot. High-quality branded produce drives quotations. "The yearly average is around €1.10-1.50/kg. Thanks to the hard work of my brother Antonio, we have grown a lot at Gala Fruit and currently commercialise 6000 cartons a month," explains wholesaler Luigi Catalano.

Each client has different needs and it's not easy to satisfy everyone. As for bananas, the ripening stage can be gathered by the colour, which ranges from deep green to bright yellow depending on how ripe the fruit is.

"Perfect bananas are an excellent calling card, just like managing to meet all our clients' needs. In 2017, we handled 20% more volumes compared to the previous year thanks to an agreement with Chiquita and, in December 2017, we commercialised 7,665 cartons."

The company also processes Scb bananas with an average price of €14 per carton.
