Retailers speak of satisfactory quality and demand

Germany: “Lemon sales still very good after the holidays”

After the great demand for citrus fruits around Christmas, sales are still good in the New Year as well, at least in the lemon business. Currently the Italian and Spanish varieties dominate events. Thomas Heeren, Managing Director of Fruchtagentur GmbH Altes Land sees a constant demand for his Sicilian lemons.

The sales were very high before Christmas. But even after the holidays and in the first week of January, the fruit agency was able to record good sales. “We expect normal harvest volumes this season. Quality this year is excellent, with price levels being about 10% lower compared to the previous year, both in the conventional and in the organic sector,” said Heeren.

Sicily
The Jork-based Fruit Agency sells the lemons of PASAM Agrumi, a growers cooperative in the Siracusa region of Sicily, and supplies the entire European market with organic lemons and lemons from conventional cultivation. Together with the cultivation areas in Spain, Sicily is one of the most important players in the lemon industry. Heeren: "There are several regions in Sicily where lemons are grown, such as Acireale, Messina, Palermo and, of course, Siracusa, and I believe that Siracusa is the best cultivation area due to the climate and soil."

The supply of lemons is pretty good almost year-round. “Right now, in the main season, we are selling the 'Primofiori' variety. In March we continue with 'Bianchetti' and in May it is the 'Maggiolini'. In the summer we work with the green lemons, the Verdellis. These are more interesting for the organic sector because of their color.”

International
The fruit agency Altes Land is centrally located in the largest contiguous fruit growing area in Northern Europe. From here, the marketing company has been offering its customers a wide range of products since 1990, including pome fruit, citrus and strawberries. Among its clientele the internationally operating fruit agency counts diverse retail chains and wholesalers.
