Jining has a long history of garlic and onion export. In recent years it was the country's leading exporter of garlic. In 2017 Jining exported a total of 768 thousand tons of garlic, worth 910 million USD. This is an increase of 11.1% in comparison with the 691 thousand tons exported in 2016. Jining also exported 133 thousand tons of onions, worth 41.42 million USD, which is an increase of 12.5% in comparison with last year.
Garlic production and processing is mainly concentrated in Jinxiang and Yutai, and surrounding counties and cities. The export varieties include fresh garlic and refrigerated garlic. Their products sell in more than 170 countries and territories worldwide. As a result of the focus on the garlic export industry, the export of Jining onions is also developing.
