Mexico: Papaya prices and trading margins

In November, the price paid to papaya producers in the main producing regions of the country; the wholesale sales quotations at supply centers; the sale prices for consumers in selected cities, and the trading margins of the fruit of Colima and Chiapas origin in the wholesale, self-service centers, supermarkets, and traditional stores, were as follows:

Prices paid to producers ($/kg)
The highest average price paid to papaya producer in origin was 7.19 pesos per kilogram, in the state of Guerrero. It was followed by Oaxaca, with 6.75; Yucatan, with 5.66; Jalisco, with 5.63; Michoacan, with 4.90; Campeche, with 5.57; Chiapas, with 4.57; Quintana Roo, with 4.37; Colima, with 4.10; Veracruz, with 3.78; and Puebla, with 3.00 pesos per kilogram. (SIAP, refers to the Rural Average Price). 

Wholesale prices ($/kg)
According to the official data of the National Market Information and Integration Service (SNIIM) of the Ministry of Economy, the papaya maradol of Colima origin achieved its highest price (14.50 pesos per kilogram) in the Wholesale Market of Queretaro, Qro. It was followed by the INDIA Central Market of Tijuana, BC, with 13.75; Morelia's wholesale market, in Michocan with 12.12, and the Distribution Centers of the City of Colima, CDCOL, with 12.00 pesos per kilogram. 

Retail prices for consumers ($/kg)
According to the National Consumer Price Index, the highest average monthly price for consumer in the selected cities was 26.16 pesos per kilogram in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora. It was followed by Ciudad Juarez Chih., with 23.62; Tijuana, BC, with 22.95; Toluca, State of Mexico, with 22.23; Monterrey, NL, with 22.18; Durango, Dgo. with 21.01; Guadalajara, Jal., with 20.57; Mexico City CDMX, with 20.92; Colima, Col., with 16.00; and Veracruz, Ver., with 14.85. 

Trading margins (%)
The highest trading margin was (254%) in Queretaro's Wholesale Market, Qro; It was followed by Tijuana's INDIA Central Market, BC, (235%), and Morelia's Supply Market, Michoacan, (with 196%).

The gross marketing margin, i.e. 10.40 $/kg, is the difference between the average monthly wholesale price in the Queretaro's wholesale market, (14.50), and the average price paid to papaya producers in Colima, ($ 4.10/kg). 

Meanwhile, the highest marketing margin of papaya maradol of Chiapas origin, was recorded in the self-service chains, convenience and traditional stores that operate in the city of Hermosillo, Son., (MC: 472%). It was followed by those of the city of Monterrey, NL, (MC: 385%); and the lowest margin recorded was in Durango, Dgo., (MC: 359%).

The gross marketing margin in pesos was 21.59 $/kg, which was the difference between the average monthly price for consumers in the city of Hermosillo, Son. (26.16 $/kg), and the average monthly price paid to the producer of papaya maradol in the region of Chiapas, (4.57 $/kg).

Between 2010 and 2016, papaya production in Colima grew by 13.4%, as it went from 51,375 tons in 2010 to 108, 996 tons in 2016. Papaya yields in the state increased by 1.8%, as they went from 52.58 tons/ha in 2010, to 53.54 tons/ha in 2016. 

The expansion of production dedicated to export stood out. The productive activity, especially for export, was very generous, as its profitability was one of the highest in the sector.
