Spain, the only producer of avocados in Europe, brings to the market around 80,000 tons of this fruit each year. The fruit, which is mainly grown in Malaga and the coast of Granada, is exported to the rest of the continent, especially to France, England and Germany. It is a good business and generates good profits, but Spanish growers are worried that Mexico might increase its exports to Europe, which could threaten their livelihood.
Mexico is currently present in the European market, but in a testimonial way. Mexico sells most of its avocados to the voracious United States, something that might change if President Donald Trump implements his idea of taxing Mexican imports with a 20% tariff to pay for the controversial wall with which he intends to separate the borders of both countries.
In face of this possibility, Mexican marketers have already begun to explore new destinations for their avocado on the other side of the ocean. If Mexico, which has a total production of 1.5 million tons, were to send 10% of its harvest to Europe, it would flood the market and ruin Spanish farmers.
