Fresh produce company Nutrano Produce Group has become the first Australian produce company to join the World Banana Forum, working towards sustainable production and trade in the global banana industry.
The World Banana Forum, hosted in Rome by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, was founded in 2009. The Forum brings together major stakeholders from the global banana supply-chain, working together to achieve consensus on best practices for sustainable production and trade.
Nutrano MD & CEO, Steven Chaur, said joining the World Banana Forum was an important step in Nutrano’s mission to be a leader in supplying world-class fresh produce.
“Bananas are Australia’s favourite fruit and Nutrano is a major supplier of bananas to Australian retailers, including Woolworths, Aldi and local grocers.
“Joining the World Banana Forum aligns Nutrano with major stakeholders around the world on issues such as banana varieties, biosecurity, category insights and social and economic challenges. “Bananas are the world’s most exported fruit, with a value of over US$10billion a year, and Nutrano is keen to be part of the global collaboration process to ensure all sustainability and trade issues are properly addressed,” Mr Chaur said.
Nutrano Executive General Manager for Bananas, Chaise Pensini, said membership of the World Banana Forum gives the company an advantage in establishing further supply and trade partnerships.
“The Forum is the major global networking body for the global banana industry, with membership from across Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.
“Membership of the World Banana Forum builds on Nutrano’s credentials in the global market,” Mr Pensini said.
The World Banana Forum hosts three main Working Groups, on Sustainable Production Systems and Environmental Impact, Distribution of Value, and Labour Rights.
