Spain: Insurance payments to kaki producers to be paid earlier

The Valencian Association of Agricultural Producers (AVA-ASAJA) has asked the Spanish Association of Agricultural Insurers (Agroseguro) to expedite the procedures for the payment of the compensations to kaki producers, some of whom recorded severe losses from the frosts recorded last week in the Region of Valencia. Initially, the agrarian organization estimated the economic losses at around 10 million Euro, but since then, the more detailed analyses that have been carried out have made it possible to conclude that the value of the damages will exceed 13 million Euro.

Agroseguro technicians have already started assessing the extent of the damages in the kaki fields affected by the frosts, and which are mostly located in the Ribera region. AVA-ASAJA believes that it would be of inestimable help if those growers could receive the corresponding compensations as soon as possible, because they need the money in order to face the costs of the next campaign.

In fact, the pruning tasks should begin shortly, and it is also worth noting that the deadline to sign the insurance contracts for the next kaki season is 20th February. The producers, who have suffered a severe blow to their profitability, will consequently need funds to be able to meet their financial commitments.

"The extent of the damage is considerable," says the president of AVA-ASAJA, Cristóbal Aguado, and many kaki growers have been left in an uncomfortable situation, so it would be very much appreciated if Agroseguro showed some sensitivity and accelerated all the procedures for the payment of compensations. 90% of the kaki crops are insured and that shows the sector's commitment to the insurance system. Now it is up to Agroseguro to show that it is a well-oiled and truly effective instrument."
