Philippines’ fruit exporters upbeat about 2018 prospects

The increasingly tight relationship between the Philippines and China has made Filipino exporters optimistic about what’s in store for 2018. The fruit export sector is certainly expected to grow more as exporters explore opportunities in the Chinese markets.

Japan is still a top export destination with a 16.2 percent share in total exports. Meanwhile, the combined markets of China and Hong Kong, saw shipments with a share of 24.31 percent. Exports to the European Union remain rosy with total sales of 677.94 million dollars, up from 549.20 million in October 2016.

Federico Escalona, executive director of the Philippine Exporters Confederation, told Cebu Daily News that aside from the export sector’s positive performance since January this year, China’s commitment to import more products from the Philippines is also another reason he is optimistic about the industry moving forward. 

In March this year, 18 Chinese firms made a purchasing order for 1.7 billion dollars worth of Philippine products such as coconut oil, banana, pineapple, mango, nickel and copper. Aside from this agreement, China had already bought 100 million dollars worth of Philippine fruits since President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit in October 2016.
