"China: "Coloring and shine of this year's apples not that good"

"As one of the main apple production regions in China, Shaanxi has quite the apple production. This has not changed much from last year, but the sales have been quite unsatisfactory this year. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, weather factors, such as the heavy rain, have affected the coloring and shine of this year's apples. Secondly, the Chinese apple production area has been increasing constantly, so the market supply also keeps growing," according to Mr. Tian Kai, an apple producer in Xunyi County, Shaanxi.

"I think that these bad sales will continue until after the Chinese New Year in February next year. The Chinese New Year will definitely increase the consumption, but this will only be momentary. There will be quite some risks in the apple trade between the Chinese New Year and the Chinese Labour Day on May 1st."

"We have around 30 hectares (300 mu) of apple fields in Zhanghong Village, Xunyi County in Shaanxi. We grow Fuji apples on 20 hectares (200 mu), Qinguan apples on 4 hectares (40 mu), and Gala apples on 6 hectares (60 mu). We are selling the majority of our apples through traditional sales channels to distributors and supermarkets in Ningbo, Chengdu, Chongqing and Hunan. We are also exporting smaller quantities to Vietnam and Bangladesh."
