Argentina: Spanish and Portuguese kiwi production to cover gaps and demand from other markets

Argentina's production of the Hayward kiwi is still young, as its cultivation began in 2005. However, it has started to gain ground and can currently supply the demand of Argentine consumers. However, it can't supply the country's demand throughout the whole year, as Argentina's production takes place from May to October. As a result, companies like Maramet are looking for production in the European continent and to set up one of their venues there. "In the counter season we work with fruit from Valencia, Cantabria, the Basque Country, and also from northern Portugal," Ignacio Rios stated.

Covering the lack of production in Argentina from May to November is not the only purpose, as having agreements with farmers in the Peninsula allows them to market the kiwi production of other markets to the rest of the world. "We have 1000 tons in each of the different production regions and, depending on the destination, we will select our most convenient outlet to prioritize the good condition of the fruit upon arrival," said Rios.

Argentina's demand for kiwis had been covered so far with Chilean and Italian fruit. In fact, both countries are the biggest producers of this fruit in their respective continents. "In this first year of international trade our goal is to capture customers and to position ourselves in the South American market."
