"China: "Increase in raw material prices hits export of Gannan navel oranges"

"This year's export season for Gannan navel oranges has already started. Compared to last year, the export price has dropped around 10%. This is mainly because the successful sales in the past few years have encouraged farmers to expand their production areas, increasing the total orange production," according to Mr. Luo Houhai, CEO of Nan Guo Shu.

"The annual production of Gannan navel oranges is over one million tons. Ganzhou in Jiangxi has become the region with the largest navel orange production area in the world. Its annual production ranks third worldwide, and it is the largest navel orange production area in China. In the past few years, the Gannan oranges have become very popular on the market, because the fruit is large, bright red, soft, and very juicy. That is why its price has also been rising constantly."

"We have large orange processing facilities in Jiangxi, Guangxi and Sichuan. We mainly purchase Gannan navel oranges, Shatang oranges, and tangerines. 60% of our oranges is sold under our own brand "Nanguoshu" and our customers' brands. They are exported to Canada, and South East Asian countries, like Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. The other 40% is sold in China. To diversify our marketing, we are using both traditional sales channels to sell to supermarkets in all the large cities in China, and large-scale e-commerce platforms, like Jingdong."

"Compared to five years ago, our Gannan navel orange export has dropped. That is mainly because the raw material prices in China have been rising constantly, affecting our competitiveness on the international market. However, I am still optimistic about the future. As farmers are increasing their production areas, they will also become more willing to invest in the fields. This will undoubtedly improve the product quality. Furthermore, the special climate and soil of the Gannan area is very beneficial for the navel orange production. That is what distinguishes the Gannan navel oranges from oranges from other regions."

"Our market development strategy is to strengthen and further expand our purchases and sales, with the Gannan area as our basis. In the next two years, we will build an orange processing facility in Chengdu to develop new breeds. We are hoping to export even more breeds to the foreign market."
