China: Bleak prospects for Xinjiang jujube

Xinjiang jujube possesses unique geographical advantages. Due to the long hours of sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night, the Xinjiang jujube has a great taste and is deeply loved by consumers. Jujubes from Xinjiang have has always occupied a high position on the domestic market. This year's harvests were good. However, jujube farmers are saying that jujube production has reached a dead end! Some of them have even cut down their own jujube trees. They are preparing to plant something else in their place. All because that the jujube price is too low.

To plant 600 meters of land with jujube costs about 1,500 yuan, while the acquisition price of a kilogram is just 10 yuan. Every 600 meters can produce about 400 kilograms of jujube. So, in other words, a farmer needs to pay more than he can earn. A lot of jujube farmers just let the harvest lay on the ground. It's easier for them to abandon it than to hire people for picking it up and selling it. Given the costs of workers' salaries, there would be no profit at all.

Jujube makes an impression as a exotic product and it's price has always been high. Earlier, the price of high quality Xinjiang jujube could reach a 100 yuan per kilo. Last year, the sales were so bad that jujube farmers from Shaanxi had to use their jujubes to feed the animals. This year, it became a "dead business".
