"Colombia: "We have increased our exports by 3%"

Colombia mainly exports the bananas it produces, only 6% of the production stays in the country. "We've had an increase in exports because we have been marketing CAT1 and CAT2 qualities for three years instead of selling them in the local market," said Javier Sanin, of CI Tropical SA. As a result, they manage to be present in more markets, such as Portugal, where they are not so demanding with physical appearance.

The Colombian banana is mainly marketed in European countries, where Belgium, France, and Italy stand out. "We export 100% of our production. Our sales approach is under contract and we have good agreements in these countries." This has allowed this Colombian company to achieve stable prices for its bananas, so it isn't affected by the fluctuations in the international markets caused by weather conditions or the participation of other countries with a similar production.

"All producing countries affect their neighbors when they produce more or less bananas and in seasons of high production. Colombia, in terms of its sales in Europe, is mainly affected by Ecuador, Costa Rica and, to a lesser extent, Guatemala. The production of African producing countries, such as Côte d'Ivoire, also affect sales," said Sanin. The banana is a commodity, so customers can get a very similar product from all origins. The real competition focuses on price.
