Unpredictable banana market in the Emirates

The banana landscape in UAE has been changing as of late. An influx of bananas from Latin America, specifically Ecuador has joined what was once a market dominated by bananas coming from the Philippines. UAE has been enjoying an increase in volume in the past two months.

Right now Dubai imports bananas from the Philippines, Ecuador and India. According to Abdullah Hassan Karmostaji of Farzana Trading in Dubai, “We import bananas from different regions of the world. Right now there are too many bananas in the market. The volume has definitely increased bringing the prices of the fruit down. Most of what we get are good quality bananas but you can also find bad quality ones. The bananas we get from the Philippines are 1 USD more expensive than the ones we get from Latin America, this has caused the importers in the country to focus more on bringing Ecuadorian bananas to the market.”

“Right now the prices are down. But the market in Dubai is very unpredictable and highly intertwined with Saudi Arabia," Karmostaji concludes.
