US: New name planned by Wal-Mart
On Feb. 1, the start of its next fiscal year, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has planned to change its legal name to Walmart Inc., according to Bloomberg. “Why the change? Because of our growing presence as a retailer who serves customers no matter how they choose to shop,” Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon said. “Most of us, and I’d guess all our customers, refer to our company as Walmart.”
France: First supermarket in Cameroon for Carrefour
Its first store in Cameroon, in the city of Douala, has been opened by French retail group Carrefour. A wide range of fresh produce, local products, and a range of Carrefour private label products will be sold in the new Carrefour Market.

China: Alibaba is ready to invest $300 mln in BigBasket
Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant, is ready to invest in India’s largest online grocer BigBasket. Since the start of the year BigBasket had been scouting for a potential buyer. Once the deal goes through, close to 40% of BigBasket would be owned by Alibaba through its investee firm Paytm.
