Oman researcher develops new pomegranate variety

A new variety of pomegranate has been developed by a researcher in Oman. Dr Qais bin Saif bin Amer Ma’awali developed the new variety which he tells ranges from 300g to 830g. 

In an interview with Muscat Daily , Dr Ma’awali, said, “The weight of each pomegranate in Mudhaibi was 300g, it touched 490g in Ma’abela. In Jebel Akhdar which is considered to be best suited for pomegranate cultivation in Oman, average weight was 830g.”

He is currently trialling the variety at multiple sites in Oman to test its viability. "I am looking for support from the Omani Farmers Association to grow the crop on a mass scale and contribute to the agricultural and economic growth of the Sultanate,” he finished.
