Italy: Interesting potato varieties for Piedmont

The annual meeting on potatoes held at Fondazione Agrion and organised by Cristiano Carli and Roberto Giordano took place on 23rd November 2017. They illustrated the results of varietal comparison for 2017 and provided some information on the cultivation and defence practices employed.

26 yellow-skinned varieties and 4 red-skinned varieties were analysed. Levante is a medium-late variety. Plants are vigorous and very productive with medium-grade oval tubers. Skin is light yellow with yellow flesh.

Corinna is a very early variety with medium vigour. Highly productive, tubers have good grades with a high saleable percentage. Short oval tubers, dark yellow peel and yellow flesh. Corinna is highly tolerant to rhizoctonia and mildew and medium-highly tolerant to scabies.

Jelly (medium-late) was confirmed as a possible alternative to Vivaldi, though fertilisers must be managed carefully. Malou (early) stood out for its quality. Carolus has peculiar reddish eyes. Its high tolerance to mildew makes it suitable for organic cultivation.

Desiree, the recent Alouette (also suitable for organic crops) and Yona remain a reference among the red varieties. Weight varies between 140 and 160 g with grades between 45-75 mm. They are all intermediate to medium-late.
