Foreign trade in containers maintains a positive pace, according to AP Moller Maersk's latest report. This is thanks to the increase in exports that reached double digits in the third quarter of the year, as they increased by 12.34% over the same quarter of 2016.
Juan Camilo Vazquez, the Sales Manager of Maersk Line for Colombia, said that dispatches of Colombian agricultural products to Europe in refrigerated containers had increased by 20.2%.
Fruit in Europe
For the third consecutive semester, Europe is a strategic ally for Colombian agriculture. "All this thanks to the flexibility that the use of refrigerated containers generates in terms of diversification of destinations, quantity of products, and transit times," according to Maersk's report.
Exports of avocados, bananas, and pineapples in containers to Europe continue growing and registered increases of 90.5%, 28.7%, and 10.2%, respectively.
"Avocado production in the departments of Antioquia and Risaralda has grown in response to a global increase in demand. Shipments to the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Spain increased by 431.3%, 418.2%, and 76.0%, respectively," the study says.
Between July and September 2017, banana exports to Germany and Belgium, a traditional export from Antioquia and Magdalena, increased by 102.4% and by 37.1%, respectively. In addition, as producers have the possibility of scheduling direct shipments of smaller lots, Colombia was able to export bananas to new markets, such as Slovenia, Turkey, Russia, and Croatia.
