"Globalisation can only be understood when travelling. But it's not enough to send sales manager abroad; directors and owners (i.e. those who make the decisions) need to move too. If we don't fill this gap, we will be forever cut out of important commercial trades," explained Macfrut President Renzo Piraccini."
Ice's welcome at reception
Piracini used Chilean cherries exported to China as an example. They take weeks to arrive but, thanks to the varieties, weather conditions, sorting and post-harvest storage techniques, the country exports increasing quantities of an elite product year after year.
"Travelling is cheap nowadays and our approach to the foreign market must be well organised. We have already missed too many chances."
Massimiliano Tremiterra from Ice
Representatives from various companies stressed that what is blocking exports is the lack of phytosanitary protocols, while Tremiterra reminded the audience that rules and regulations are very strict in China.
It is rumoured that Caselli, Bonaccini and the phytosanitary authorities from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture have met to discuss the various existing protocols, including the one on pears initiated recently.
