Negotiations underway for table grapes

Spain and China formalise peach and plum export protocol

The General Secretary of Agriculture and Food, Carlos Cabanas, has officially signed a protocol agreed in mid-2016 with the Chinese authorities for the export of peaches and plums to that market, and which has already made it possible for exports to China to start. Between the months of January and August of this year, these shipments reached a value of 9.4 million Euro.

Both countries have addressed various aspects of future cooperation and have analysed the documents that they are currently negotiating, such as the one for table grapes.

They have also agreed to create a technical group between both Ministries devoted to certifications and exchanges with the purpose of sharing information and proposing solutions that can contribute to improving safety in their trade exchanges.

China is a strategic market for many Spanish agro-food companies, as the potential for expansion of Spanish exports is considerable.

Spanish agro-food exports to China have multiplied in recent years. In 2016, China imported Spanish agro-food products (food and beverages) worth 1,125.5 million Euro; 48% more than in the previous year (in 2008, Spanish sales only reached 80 million Euro). Agricultural products already account for 27% of Chinese imports from Spain.

The General Secretary of Agriculture and Food of the MAPAMA and the Deputy Minister of Agriculture of China, Qu Dongfu, have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to strengthen future cooperation.

The fields of cooperation identified as priorities in this Memorandum are the control of livestock diseases and crop pests, water use and water saving technologies, the control of pesticides and veterinary drug residues, as well as agricultural insurance, among others.
