Italy: Citrus fruit campaign kicks off at Red CoP PO

The citrus fruit campaign has started well for the Red Co.P brand, as abundant quantities Navel oranges with excellent Brix levels and good outer colour have started to become available already in early November.

"The campaign is looking good in terms of both volumes and product appreciation. We opted not to use post-harvest treatments, so our labels read: 'untreated product with edible peel'."

"We did it not only to stand out against the products from overseas but most of all because we feel that natural products constitute an added value to consumers," said Sefano Restuccia (in the photo), sales manager for Red Co.P.

The PO owns 700 hectares in the provinces of Catania and Syracuse and is growing thanks to trusted partners that helped the brand increase its turnover by 40%.

The company is one of the leading in the commercialisation of a wide variety of citrus fruit including Tarocco, Moro and Sanguinello oranges and prestigious lemons. Over the past few years, it focused on production diversification to make its produce available for at least ten months a year.

"As regards the lemon campaign, we started harvesting the 2KR Primofiore variety because it is currently the only one that guarantees good quantities with suitable grades."

"We are paying the price of the prolonged drought, which caused fruits to weigh less than usual. Organoleptic qualities are still excellent though, so lemons are doing well and remain among the most prestigious national productions."

"The start of the season is looking good, as we are expecting to sell considerable volumes at satisfactory prices, especially when it comes to Limone di Siracusa IGP. The Tarocco orange campaign will start in the first week of December. Quality seems good especially in early areas and grades are medium-small in this case too. The Moro orange season will start on December 20th."

Most of Red Co.P Moro oranges are shipped abroad, to Germany in particular. "Our German partner requires considerable quantities until late March 2017."

"I would like to take this chance to congratulate the new President of Consorzio di tutela Arancia rossa di Sicilia IGP Giovanni Selvaggi, whom I met a few days ago. I was impressed by his professionalism and commitment, which is a good sign as the blood orange sector needs to improve."

"Italian retailers are showing a lot of interest in the organic productions, so we have increased the production and commercialisation of certified products. We are currently packaging organic lemons in 500 gram packets and organic Navel oranges in 1 kg packets. In addition, Moro and Tarocco oranges will also become part of the organic circuit over the next few months."
