Peru: FTA with Australia will boost asparagus exports

Peruvian shipments to Australia have registered a 30% year-on-year growth in the last five years. In 2016 Peruvian exports of asparagus and quinoa amounted to US $6.32 million and US $2.31 million, respectively.

In the first three quarters of this year, the country has exported US $5.23 million in asparagus and US $ 2.29 million in quinoa.

According to the Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute (IDEXCAM) of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (CCL), the upcoming trade agreement between the two countries will mainly boost exports of asparagus and quinoa, which would register significant growth in value and volume.

The FTA will also benefit sugar-free cocoa powder and mango exports.

"The values of these products still doesn't surpass the tens of millions because of an absence of tariff benefits, but it's easy to predict that the benefits negotiated with this agreement will lead to a marked growth in exported volumes and values," stated Carlos Posada, CEO of Idexcam-CCL.
