Association hamburg.bio foundedAbout one fifth of the area of the district of Hamburg is used for agricultural purposes, for example in the Altes Land and in the Vier- und Marschlanden. Almost 500 of Hamburg's gastronomic, commercial and processing companies are already operating organically. The stated goal of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg: more land for organic farming and more suppliers of organically produced products. This not least satisfies the consumers' desire for production and processing in the region, short transport routes and transparent retail chains.
Around 15 organic companies from the metropolitan area around the Hanseatic city have founded the association ‘hamburg.bio’. The members of hamburg.bio represent all stages of the value chain. They are producers, processors, wholesalers and retailers. The impetus for this new association was Hamburg's accession to the Network of Organic Cities, just over a year ago. In February of 2017 this already resulted in the trade and consumer fair hamburg.bio. It was organized by the association Nah:türlich genießen, supported by the Department of Economy, Transport and Innovation (BWVI). In 2018, the convention will take place on April 7th and 8th at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, Adolphsplatz 1.
This is how hamburg.bio wants to be involved:
- As a contact point for companies, interested in switching to organic.
- As a forum for organic actors who want to exchange, network and cooperate.
- As initiator of events and projects that make bio-topics more public. For example, the association plans to have a sustainability congress and an action month in September 2018.
Hamburg.bio board member Karl-Wolfgang Wilhelm explains: "People in Hamburg want production and processing in the region, shorter transport routes and transparent retail chains. We want to partner with and support the free and Hanseatic city of Hamburg in its goals to put more organic food on people’s plates and to have more organically cultivated areas in the metropolitan region.”
